Your 99 — Culture
What we are. What we are not. How we talk. How we build.
This document defines the soul of the Your 99 community. The manifesto says why. The agreement says how. This says who we are when no one is writing manifestos.
Why This Document Exists
The first 50 interactions in a community define the culture for the first 50,000. Culture is not a nice-to-have that you add later. It is the first thing you build — before features, before products, before scale. A community with great software and bad culture dies. A community with good culture and basic software thrives.
This document is not a list of rules. Rules create compliance. Culture creates belonging. What follows is who we are.
What We Are
We are builders and users who believe the people who create value should own the value they create. That's it. Not a political movement. Not a tech ideology. Not a revolution. A straightforward belief that if you use something, contribute to something, and make something valuable — you should own a piece of it.
We are honest about what we know and what we don't. We know the math works. We know building costs dropped. We know users deserve better. We don't know if governance scales to millions. We don't know which legal structures work in every jurisdiction. We don't know how fast we'll grow. We say all of this, openly, always.
We are patient. Movements that last are built slowly. We are not in a rush to announce, to launch, to scale. We are in a rush to get things right. A product that works for 1,000 people who love it is worth more than a launch that reaches 100,000 people who forget about it.
We are rigorous. Claims come with numbers. Opinions come with reasoning. Disagreement is welcome — lazy disagreement is not. "I don't think this will work" is the beginning of a conversation. "I don't think this will work because the switching costs in social media are too high — here's the data" is the standard.
What We Are Not
We are not hype. No "revolutionary." No "disrupting." No "game-changing." No "to the moon." The community speaks with the same restraint the design uses whitespace. If the idea is good, it doesn't need exclamation marks. If the product is useful, it doesn't need adjectives.
When someone in the community writes "this is going to be huge!!!" — the response is not mockery. It's a gentle redirect: "What specifically makes you think so? What data supports that?"
We are not speculation. Your 99 is not a financial opportunity. Stake is not an investment. There are no returns to predict, no charts to analyze, no tokens to trade. Anyone who approaches Your 99 as a way to make money from speculation has misunderstood what this is. Stake is a relationship with a product, measured in contribution, not a financial instrument measured in price.
We are not extraction. We do not extract value from our community. Not through data. Not through attention. Not through artificial scarcity. Not through manufactured urgency. If a design pattern exists to manipulate behavior — dark patterns, FOMO, engagement hooks, infinite scroll, notification spam — it does not belong here.
Every product in the ecosystem that uses manipulative design patterns is failing the community. Not because it's illegal. Because it's a betrayal. The whole point is that we are not them.
We are not tribalism. We don't hate the companies we challenge. We acknowledge what they built, often brilliantly. Notion is great software. Instagram connected billions of people. ChatGPT made AI accessible to everyone. We respect the engineering, the design, the ambition.
What we challenge is the ownership model. The products are often excellent. The deal is unfair. We can admire the craft while rejecting the structure.
We are not a grievance forum. Complaining about how bad Instagram is, how expensive Notion is, how invasive ChatGPT is — this is useful as context, not as content. Every complaint should point toward a construction: "Here's what's broken. Here's what we could build instead." This is a construction site, not a comment section.
How We Talk
In discussions
Substance over volume. A single well-researched post is worth more than twenty hot takes. Before posting, ask: "Does this add information or just opinion? If opinion, is it informed?"
Show your work. "Notion has 30M users, raised prices 40% in 2024, and markdown export means moderate switching cost — here's why it's vulnerable" is the standard. "I think Notion sucks" is not.
Disagree constructively. "I disagree because..." not "That's wrong." Attack arguments, never people. The person you disagree with today might build the product you use tomorrow.
Acknowledge uncertainty. "I think," "the data suggests," "one interpretation is" — these are signs of rigor, not weakness. Certainty without evidence is the language of hype. We don't speak it.
In public
Let the work speak. When sharing Your 99 externally, share substance: a research report, a product launch, a distribution milestone, a governance decision. Not "we're going to change the world" — "here's what we built this week."
No astroturfing. No coordinated campaigns. No fake enthusiasm. No "everyone go comment on this post." If the idea spreads, it's because people genuinely believe in it. Manufactured virality is a lie, and we don't lie.
Respect the audience's intelligence. When someone asks "Is this real or just marketing?" — the answer is the specific, verifiable details. The agreement. The transparent financials. The governance records. Not persuasion. Proof.
How We Build
Products
Simple first. The minimum that solves the problem. Not the maximum that demonstrates capability. Every feature adds complexity, and complexity is the enemy of understanding. If a user can't understand what the product does in 30 seconds, it has too many features.
Transparent always. Every financial number published. Every governance decision recorded. Every cost visible. The moment we hide something, we become what we're replacing. Transparency is not a feature. It is a requirement.
User data is sacred. Collected only when necessary. Used only for the stated purpose. Never sold. Never used for model training without explicit community governance approval. Exportable always. Deletable always. This is not negotiable.
Community
Personal while possible. Automation is the last resort, not the first optimization. When Rado can personally reply to a community member, he does. When a builder can personally thank a user for a bug report, they should. Scale will eventually demand systems. But the default is human.
Moderation is transparent. If content is removed, the reason is public. If a user is banned, the community knows why. No shadow bans. No silent deletions. No algorithmic suppression. Moderation is a necessary function, not a hidden power.
Governance is real. When we say users govern, we mean it. Not consultation. Not feedback. Actual decisions with actual consequences. The builder proposes, users decide. If governance is theater, the whole model collapses. It must be real from the first vote.
The Line We Draw
There is one line that, once crossed, cannot be uncrossed:
The moment we optimize for growth over integrity, we have failed.
Growth that comes from manipulating users is not growth — it is extraction wearing a different name. A community of 10,000 honest participants is worth infinitely more than a community of 1,000,000 manufactured through dark patterns.
If the choice is ever between faster growth and staying true to these principles — we choose these principles. Every time. Without exception.
This is not naivety. This is strategy. The companies we challenge grew fast through extraction and are now dying of the disease they created. We grow slowly through trust, and trust compounds in ways extraction never can.
For New Members
If you just joined Your 99, here's what you need to know:

You matter here. Not as a data point. Not as a monthly active user. As a person whose contribution has value and whose voice has weight.

Read the documents. The Manifesto, the Agreement, the Mechanism — they're written to be readable, not to be skipped. Understanding the model is understanding the community.

Contribute substance. Your first post doesn't need to be brilliant. It needs to be honest. Share what you know. Ask what you don't. Show your reasoning.

Disagree freely. The community is stronger when ideas are challenged. If you think something won't work, say so — and say why. The best ideas survive disagreement. The worst ideas need protection from it.

Be patient with us. We're building something that doesn't have a template. We will make mistakes. We will be transparent about them. We will fix them. That's the deal.
This is not a code of conduct. Codes of conduct list prohibited behaviors. This document describes a culture — who we are, how we think, what we value. The difference matters. You can comply with a code and still undermine a community. You can't embody a culture and do that.
